 Subject and predicate 


Sentences has two parts : a subject and a predicate.

1) subject is a part which name the person or thing that we are speaking about.

2) predicate is a part which tell us something about the subject.

For example:

Australia is the largest island in the world.

Australia is subject and the remaining part which is the largest island in the world is predicate.

A predicate can be of the following types :

1) verb + object

E.g ) a leader guides his followers.

Guide - verb
Followers - object

2) verb + complement


E.g ) He was asleep.

Was - verb
Asleep - complement

3) verb + adverbial

E.g ) she ran upstairs.

Ran - verb
Upstairs - adverbial

Q.1 ) identify the Subject and predicate in the following sentences.




1. We cannot afford to exhaust our natural resources
ANS. We - subject
cannot afford to exhaust our natural resources - predicate

2) all the money in the world couldn't have saved her.
ANS. all the money in the world - subject
couldn't have saved her - predicate

3) nature is the best teacher.
ANS. Nature - subject
is the best teacher - predicate

4) the doctor advised him to go on a long holiday.
ANS. the doctor - subject
advised him to go on a long holiday - predicate

5) the singing of the birds delights us.
ANS. the singing of the birds - subject
delights us - predicate
